This piece was made possible by a grant from Wave Hill, NY. Pardes is a Hebrew word meaning "garden" and Pardes means "foreign land" in Urdu/Hindi. I created my own paradise or garden by propelling one of the figures into another zone...or into that foreign land. The army of women at the bottom are taken from one of my paintings about Esther from the story of Purim. Also in the crowd of women below is a blue tinted photo of my great-great grandfather from Pune, India. This ancestors image also reminds us of the place the immigrant has left behind. In this piece I try to show the past and the future simultaneously.
